Rawiri Paratene gave us megafauna magic last week as a grumpy grandad in Whale Rider: here, its the magic of madness. He’s the self-proclamied second son of God, living on the brink of society with an outsider family in a men’s boarding house. A small but truly grown-up local film that also makes allowances for fantasy, with skilful performances by Paratene, Ian Mune, Greg Johnson and Sara Wiseman. Based on the novel by Mike Riddell and directed by his wife, Rosemary, a Hamilton District Court judge (2010). 8
