Help from our friends…
Followers of the blog will know that we faced a crisis when it was announced that independent films would receive not NZ Film Commission subsidy for entries to the 2011 Aotearoa Film & Television Awards – in contrast to NZFC-funded flicks. At $300 per entry it created a real barrier to films such as The Insatiable Moon.
But rather than wring our hands in anguish, we did what we’ve always done: went to our fans and supporters. And once again, they have come to the party with love and generosity. We’re delighted to announce that we’ve now received enough to be able to enter into all the major categories! And with the latest contribution (see below) we hope to be able to enter some awards that we simply couldn’t have contemplated earlier.
This all represents the little guys getting one back. The conventional model has wealthy organisations spending in support of their own productions, offering resources that are beyond the reach of independent films. As an example, the NZFC not only subsidises its own films into the awards, but is a major sponsor of the entire event. But The Insatiable Moon has always operated out of a different approach. We rely on the little people who fly below the radar, and believe in their power and support to drive us forward. The latest episode reinforces what a refreshing model this is.
And now the latest generosity has been demonstrated by renowned photographer Allan Johnston, who has donated a magnificent landscape work of art to auction in support of our crusade to get our film, actors and crew into the competition for awards. With Allan’s support, we are auctioning this beautiful piece – with all proceeds going to entry fees for the awards. The auction is open to all – you can find details here.
Heartfelt thanks to all our fans and supporters for demonstrating there are different forces in the world than commerce and power.
