Bob says:

“Bastards are bastards and they’ll be kicking the shit out of the likes of us ‘til the end of time.”

Bob lives and works with people who are at the arse end of society. People who have no power or value in a world based on commerce and status. He’s seen how the mentally ill and the homeless are treated; how they’re ignored; how they’re always at the wrong end of the equation. He knows it for himself – the fear and prejudice of his neighbours, and the moves to get his boarding house closed down.

Bob also knows this is not something new. For all of history the poor have had the shit kicked out of them by the rich. Whoever the government is, whatever the politics is – the result is always the same. The little people get shafted, and the world moves on. It’s nothing to be surprised about, but also it’s no reason to be depressed. Bob understands that bastards are bastards, and that sooner or later they’ll get their come-uppance.

This last week the Tory-run Westminster Council ordered a ban on people sleeping on the street, and also on feeding anyone who does sleep on the street. They felt it was time to stop encouraging people from being homeless. It was clearly becoming a lifestyle of choice, because so many people were doing it. The pragmatic solution is to make it illegal. And why not outlaw compassion at the same time? Bastards are bastards.

It’s a fateful coincidence that The Insatiable Moon opened in London during the same week. Someone should warn the Westminster Council that Arthur is now roaming their streets. And they don’t want to mess with the second son of God.

Bob’s answer is to have a celebration – to break out the icecream. It’s in these small acts of subversion that we recognise dignity and humanity, and the inability of the bastards who torment us to rob us of anything significant. We need to find such small symbols of resistance before things become entirely mad.
