Smelling the coffee
On a long journey it’s easy to get preoccupied with the section of the track you happen to be on at the minute. Nothing wrong with that, and it could even be a form of mindfulness. But it’s also useful from time to time to take stock of where it all began and where you’re headed.
Having come back from the UK and some great screenings over there, we’ve slotted back into the third week of general release in NZ cinemas. It’s easy to get caught up in checking the box office figures and worrying that we’re not getting enough people in the audience. And then one fine spring morning you wake up and think, bloody hell, we actually made the movie after all those years. And it turned out to be a film we’re all proud of. And it featured in the NZ Film Festival. And it’s now in real cinemas where people actually pay to go along and watch it. And next year it’s going to be screening throughout the UK.
And – this is the big one – every day there’s a string of emails from people telling us how they laughed and they cried, they loved the film, they’ve been thinking and talking about it, and they want all their friends to go and see it too. In the light of all this, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee – and to celebrate the amazing journey that has brought the humble story of Arthur to the world. There’s the hidden and slightly absurd notion – one that’s hard to ignore – that it’s a journey which has hardly even begun.

Pip says:
I’d only been thinking the same thing myself
recently, it’s good to stop and celebrate
Yes it’s all been very worthwhile and indeed
In many ways the journey is just under way
Thanks for the reminder Mike

I’ve been with quite a few people now, ranging in age from 20′s to 80′s. They have all felt deeply moved and affected. The fairly conservative 82 year old lady I went with last night said: “In a way I wish I hadn’t seen it. because I am going to find it difficult to sleep tonight – that film has given me so much to think about.” Rock on insomnia!
