One from the heart
It’s a week past the premiere of a small film with big hopes.
For most people it would be enough to see their film make it to the screen with a full house, as part of a festival. But for those of us who have given eight years of our lives to making it happen, it was the redemption of so many fragile dreams. How to describe what it means to be in an audience who laugh and cry in all the right places, and who are so enthusiastically generous in their response.
As a screenwriter, it is the sort of experience you hardly dare think of. To see your words brought to life by such a wonderfully talented cast, directed so deftly, edited to perfection, captured exquisitely by our cinematographer, and scored magnificently – it doesn’t get better than that. If we celebrated through the night, it was with good cause.
On a personal note, it was only 10 months ago when the project looked like failing completely. I had resigned myself to consigning a significant segment of my life to the dustbin. There are so many things that can go wrong in filmmaking, and it so rare for them to go right. But once we made the decision to forge ahead with the film, an almost continuous sequence of synchronicities began, and this magic carried us through all the way to the premiere.
But for those at the heart of the venture, this wonderful time marks the beginning of a journey rather than the end of it. We invite you all to continue with the audacity of hope as our little film makes its way in the world.

Paul Maxwell says:
Mike, your dream allied to an amazing resilience has been rewarded in a wonderful way. I came on board late in the process, but quickly realised that this film had an inexorable momentum of its own. I expect that momentum to continue, you and those around you who kept the faith deserve no less. ‘Onya mate.
