In the Mix
Writing this from the bowels of the studio at the post production house as we complete the final mix of the film. Today is the last day in which we have the ability to affect anything to do with the film. After this it becomes (more or less) a fixed entity. In the room currently are our sound mixer Tom Miskin, composer Neville Copland, director Rosemary Riddell, and moi. Editor Paul Maxwell is dropping in and out from time to time.
I’ve always been an advocate of the importance of audio in a film – I regard it as making up a good half of how a film is perceived by an audience. So it’s been a great experience to be trawling through the final mix. For the first time we’re listening to the complete dialogue edit with ADR, the foley, the original music in place, and everything balanced. I’m happy to report that it sounds great! Even jaded old hacks like us who have watched the film a gazillion times have been caught up in it all over again.
Better get back to work…
