ADR

Yesterday was a reunion of sorts as we were doing ADR (automated dialogue replacement) at Images & Sound in Auckland. This was just the first tranche with another couple of sessions to go. Mostly it was the replacement of lines where there had been significant background noise (not too many thanks to the great work by our sound man Craig Perry), and the addition of a few breathing and reaction effects. But for one scene, we needed to compose and record a number of lines to give a new shape and meaning to the drama. It was an interesting process as lines were built up, one actor at a time, until in the end we had a flow of conversation going. All under the skillful watch of our operator Steve Finnigan.

It was lovely to have some of the boarding house guys coming in during the day. Among the actors called in were Mick Innes (John), Don Linden (Wal), Rob McCulley (Sandy) and Lee Tuson (Pete). All of them great supporters of the film, and a load of fun to work with. It reminded me of the very special camaraderie which these guys developed as they worked together on the shoot, and the friendships they forged which have lasted afterwards.

I drove up to Auckland with my good friend Paul Fromont, together with his daughters Sophie and Alice who play the vicar’s daughters in the film. Paul himself has a role as an extra, having been on set long enough to get included in the action! The two girls did a great job in the ADR suite, despite it being their first experience of the procedure. All in all a great day, and one day closer to completion of the film.
