This is one of those films where the director is sleeping with both the writer and the producer! And has been for quite some time – today marks the 35th wedding anniversary for Mike and Rosemary. The Insatiable Moon is the third major creative collaboration (not counting children) that we’ve undertaken together, and the biggest. I think the greatest tribute to long term relationships I can offer is that we still love to work together, have loads of fun, and deeply admire and respect each other’s abilities. The picture above is from when we met in London in 1974 – a lifetime ago.

Marriage doesn’t have many supporters these days, and for many it has proved a bridge too far. For us it has been enriching and liberating, and we still celebrate it. James K. Baxter wrote in He Waiata mo Te Kare:

Those we knew when we were young,

None of them have stayed together,

All their marriages battered down like trees

By the winds of a terrible century.

But with him I would say we have achieved something against the odds. No one gets through a generation of relationship without fighting for the chance to carry on – but sometimes it’s worth it. My salutations to a remarkable woman, Rosemary.

Nobody would have given tuppence for our chances

Yet our love did not turn to hate

35 years on...
